As summer winds to a close, our staff harvests the fruit from the Gentleman’s Orchard and the Family Orchard in the Garden. With more than 500 trees, the job takes many hands! We use the fruit from the orchards to create beautiful displays, donate to local food banks, and make fruit butter and cider.
Madeline Turner, a Black inventor from Oakland, paved the way for modern fruit presses in the United States. She designed and patented the Turner Fruit Press in 1916, which worked like an assembly line.
