Filoli Appoints Five Board Members

Woodside, CA, January 11, 2023– Filoli announces the addition of five new members to its 2023 Board of Directors today: Carolyn Daley, Lauren Foster, Katherine Malone-France, Kristen Van Dam and Martin Yan. Filoli is a vibrant landscape and non-profit community cultural center of the Bay Area situated on unceded lands of the Ramaytush Ohlone.

“Following a thoughtful process, Filoli has identified a class of new board members that represents the Bay Area and brings tremendous skills as the organization grows to meet the changing needs of our community,” said Board President Carol Moran.

The Filoli Board of Directors is composed of individuals committed to Filoli’s mission of connecting its rich history with a vibrant future through beauty, nature and shared stories and is responsible for the governance and support of Filoli Center as a 501(c)(3) organization. Filoli’s 2023 Board of Directors is led by Carol Moran, serving her second year as President. Other Board Officers include David Wollenberg, Past President; David Wessel, Vice President: Bob Nibbi; Treasurer; and Sydney Leung, Secretary.

“2022 brought incredible success to Filoli with an approved Master Plan in hand, completion of nearly $3M in preservation and restoration projects and a record-breaking attendance,” said Filoli CEO Kara Newport. “Filoli’s Board of Directors set the tone of our all-inclusive, visitor-centered experience for the Bay Area, and through its leadership, Filoli has not only established a clear strategic direction but it also has become a successful and relevant organization.”


Welcome New & Returning Board Members

We are ecstatic to welcome Carolyn Daley back after a mandatory year off between terms! Carolyn has led Filoli in her roles as Board President, Chair of the Development Committee, and fundraising events sponsor. A CPA by training, Carolyn led an effort at Filoli to bring the financials accounting and reporting to a higher standard.

Lauren Foster has extensive education and experience in the Healthcare industry and is currently the Head of Clinical Product and Research at Bold, a digital eGenXcise platform for older adults. She is currently active in the Engagement Committee and was married at Filoli this summer.

Kristen Van Dam is passionate about Ecology and is currently an ecologist at the East Bay Regional Park District. She has 18 years experience in ecology, restoration and stewardship of California natural lands and ecosystems. Kristen has been learning more about Filoli through her attendance at the 2022 Filoli Gala, Summer Nights, and board member Sydney Leung’s birthday party at Filoli.

Chef Martin Yan is a well-known celebrity chef who starred in the cooking show, Yan Can Cook, which featured recipes for stir fried foods and an assortment of various other traditional Chinese meals and cooking techniques. He is involved in the bay area community and recently created 27 video segments of him exploring San Francisco Chinatown’s food and culture scene. Martin attended the Filoli Vegetable Garden Preview Brunch and is especially excited about Filoli’s interest in interpreting food culture. He will be filming an upcoming episode of his YouTube show at Filoli.

Katherine Malone-France is the chief preservation officer of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She brings broad experience and expertise as she served as the senior vice president for historic sites at the National Trust, leading its portfolio of 28 historic sites around the country to provide expansive and sustainable public benefit as they model exemplary preservation, collections management, and interpretation. Katherine’s work aligns with Filoli’s values as her leadership has also resulted in a diverse range of collaborations with contemporary artists creating new works inspired by National Trust sites and a revision of the National Trust’s collections management policy that has been hailed as a national model for its inclusion of historic structures and landscapes.
