FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WOODSIDE, Calif., September 6, 2022– Filoli is a vibrant landscape of the Bay Area situated on the unceded ancestral lands of the Ramaytush Ohlone. Today, this estate serves as a community cultural center and announces their autumn season filled with fruitful fall fun!

Every weekend September 24-October 30, and on Monday, October 10, 2022, Filoli’s historic Gentleman’s Orchard opens to celebrate the harvest season for Orchard Days, featuring delightful foods, local musicians, and stunning fall colors. “The Gentleman’s Orchard is an exceptional setting for learning, relaxing, and enjoying the beauty of this season in California’s diverse landscape,” says CEO Kara Newport. “Harvest is a universal theme for celebration across cultures, and Orchard Days is a fitting time for us to work collaboratively with our partners to tell more inclusive stories.”

Every weekend has a theme, and visitors can explore the full schedule of events on Filoli’s website. Special programming includes Hispanic Heritage weekend on September 24 and 25, created in collaboration with Bay Area activist and artist Adrian Arias and local community organization Casa Circulo Cultural. Catch performances by Folclórico Colibrí and Anaís Azul, and grab a bite from the food truck Tacos Chula Puebla. On October 15 and 16, learn about the Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot through programming led by the Peninsula Jewish Community Center. Filoli’s Gentleman’s Orchard will be open on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, October 10, and separate programming will occur in the Garden to commemorate the holiday.

Along with unique programming each weekend, every Orchard Day visitors can settle into a redwood chair with a cup of cider or an autumn treat, soak up gorgeous fall color in the exquisite autumn light, take a self-guided orchard walk to learn about the historic Gentleman’s Orchard, and capture memories at a picturesque fall photo vignette. “The Gentleman’s Orchard at Filoli is over 100 years old and it holds more than 500 fruit trees,” says Director of Horticulture Jim Salyards. “For over 10 years, we have partnered with the nonprofit Village Harvest, which harvests or receives donations of fruit from orchards big or small, and gives the fruit to Second Harvest of Silicon Valley and St. Anthony’s Padua Dining Room in Menlo Park,” says Salyards. Filoli donates over 2,000 pounds of fruit every year. Learn more about how Filoli uses their produce on their website.

Beyond the Orchard, seasonal learning experiences are also available, including Fall Wreath Parties on October 20 and 21, and Service Learning: Orchard Care on September 13, 15, and 18. Wreath Parties are one-of-a-kind wreath-making experiences, designed for guests to learn the basics of building an autumnal wreath. Service Learning attendees will pick fruit for Filoli’s products, spread mulch, and decorate for the fall season. Both experiences are led by the expert Horticulturists on Filoli’s staff and are sure to teach guests something new.

For more autumnal fun, Filoli is open every day for visitors to find stunning fall color throughout the Garden, fall perennials in bloom, and fruit butters and hard cider for sale produced locally from Filoli’s very own trees. “Thanks to the California climate, Filoli is truly a year-round experience,” says Director of Horticulture Jim Salyards, “Fall is an exceptional example of the garden’s beauty beyond the spring and summer with the crispness in the air and the colors on the different fruit trees and ornamentals turning to hues of yellow, orange and red."
