Acanthus spires make their annual appearance each Spring in the Garden. You may recognize the shape of their leaves from the top of a classic architectural element: the Corinthian column! Dahlias have taken up residence next to the Knot Garden! Check out the young blooms and the geometric pattern they create. One of the most popular trees in the United States, Dogwoods thrive in the sun or shade. Their "blossoms" are actually petal-like bracts (leaves that surround the flower). An array of Mock Orange shrubs, including this 'Belle Etoile' variety, are in full bloom between the Cutting Garden and Yew Allee. It is known for its fabulous fragrance! The Perennial Border runs along the Laurel Cherry hedge and contains Smoke Bush, Roses, Purpletop Vervain, and more! The 'Sally Holmes' climbing rose, which blooms continuously throughout the summer, makes this arbor in the Rose Garden a favorite photo spot. Water Lilies bloom in the Sunken Garden pond. On a warm day, dragonflies dance above the water and frog song fills the air. The yellow 'Full Moon Rising' Rose that climbs along the side of the Cutting Garden Cage was chosen for Filoli due to its disease resistance and fragrance. The 'Queen Elizabeth' Rose was a favorite of Mrs. Roth's. Some of her plantings from the mid-1950s are still thriving in the Rose Garden and can be spotted near the Roth Patio. The Clematis 'Jackmanii' vine on the balustrade by the Sunken Garden is showing off with deep purple blooms. The Rose Garden is in full bloom! Wander through and pick your favorite scent - or favorite flower name. Can you spot the 'Betty White' Rose, or the 'Fourth of July' Rose? The delicate cupped blooms of the 'Scepter'd Isle' Rose bring fragrance to the Chartres Garden. The phrase "sceptered isle" from Shakespeare's play Richard II refers to the island of Britain, and this rose from famous English rose breeder David Austin epitomizes the classic English rose look.
