As the wet season begins, Mushrooms are appearing beneath the Redwoods on the Spring Creek Trail. Joining the incoming winter crops in the Vegetable Garden are Calendula. Also known as Pot Marigold, Calendula has edible flower petals. The 100-year-old dwarf Pomegranate shrubs are providing their seasonal color with their miniature fruits along the back of the House! Throughout the month, the fan-shaped leaves of the Ginkgo trees will turn golden yellow, bringing gorgeous fall color to the Walled Garden. The English Holly shrubs in the Walled Garden are getting in the holiday spirit with their bright red berries! Wander through the Woodland Garden, where Japanese Maples have created a red and orange canopy of fall leaves. Spot the Wax Begonias in the Walled Garden and in pots accenting the House Terraces. Did you know that Begonias have separate male and female flowers that are borne on the same plant? The Peach and other stone fruit trees in the Garden Orchard are showing their very best fall colors. Look out for the purple blooms of Sea Lavender, also known as Seafoam Statice, in the Sunken Garden. It's a favorite for dried flower arrangements due to its lasting color. Chrysanthemums, aka “Mums,” are the quintessential autumn flower. Several varieties and colors are currently holding court in the back of the Cutting Garden. Commonly known as Chilean Bellflower, Lapageria rosea blooms year round and is the national flower of Chile. Spot it by the staff gate on your left across from the Garden House before you enter the Walled Garden. See What's Blooming
