Service Learning

Filoli's Service Learning program provides a free learning experience on a variety of topics, such as horticulture and garden tips and tricks, combined with an opportunity to volunteer to support Filoli. Enjoy time with family and friends, meet new people, be immersed in the beauty of Filoli, and give back to this treasured community resource through service. There are no minimum requirements or minimum hours of service. Children are welcome to participate. Anyone is able to sign-up for just one program or as many as you like.

Pumpkin Carving

Sunday, Monday, & Tuesday
August 10, 11 & 12, 2025
9am–12pm

Help Filoli make Halloween magic by carving faux pumpkins for our Nightfall display! For this special Service Learning program, participants will carve foam pumpkins that will light up the property this Fall. Participants should be comfortable cutting foam using serrated tools, but no artistic ability required.

Cost: Free; Participants receive free admission to Filoli on the day of the program.

Bulb Packing

9am–12pm

Take part in the most anticipated Service Learning program of the year with Filoli’s very own Horticulture Team. This indoor activity will have you packing bulbs to support this year’s Holidays at Filoli. In addition to participating in an invaluable program for Filoli, you will also gain valuable knowledge about when and how to plant bulbs to create your own beautiful spring display.

Holiday Prep

Thursday, October 30, 2025
9am–12pm

Collaborate with the Horticulture Team as they embark on turning Filoli into a holiday wonderland! Transforming the historical estate into a wintery paradise is no easy feat. This Service Learning program is focused on Holiday preparations, and will have you participating in a variety of festive decor projects. Come ready to be creative, learn a thing or two about gardening, and stay for a visit afterwards, on us!

Winter Projects

Saturday, November 1, 2025
9am–12pm

Partner up with the Horticulture Team for a Service Learning day focused on Winter Cleanup in the Garden! You’ll help them rake leaves and prep the garden beds for the colder months ahead. You might even participate in some Holiday projects! During the break, get some valuable tips from the team on bulb planting, mulching, and other seasonal techniques that will help keep your garden ready to thrive in the winter!
