A Rutgers University study found that having flowers in your home increases happiness and reduces depression and anxiety. Flowers can also increase emotional contact with friends and family. Think about someone sending you flowers. You can feel the smile widen on your face.
Floral arrangements have graced the House at Filoli since its completion in 1917 and have brought joy to guests who stop to smell the flowers and admire their beauty. The country estate celebrates the art of Flower Arranging in a big way with their annual Flower Show taking place from June 1 through the 3rd 2018. The arrangements this year will follow the theme California Kaleidoscope in honor of the rich history and environment of California.
This long-standing tradition makes Filoli the ideal location to practice floral design. We chatted with one of our floral design instructors, Katherine Glazier, to discuss the floral design classes available at Filoli and the lifelong benefits and skills students take away from the study and art of arranging flowers.
What is Floral Design?
Katherine: [Floral Design is] artfully arranging flowers for your own enjoyment and to share with others. Flower arranging is a fun and creative way to bring the indoors and the garden into your house to enjoy.
How does Filoli inspire you in your work?
Katherine: Being here . . . it’s hard not to be inspired by the beauty that surrounds you. Just entering the property, you take a deep breath and you can just enjoy the nature, and I think that inspires me to create beautiful flower arrangements right here at Filoli and hopefully share that passion for Floral Design right here with my students.
Where do you get the materials?
Katherine: We buy the materials from the San Francisco Flower Mart. The San Francisco Flower Mart is internationally renowned as having a wonderful selection of material for florists and customers in general.
What do students take away from participating in a Floral Design Class?
Katherine: They take away a feeling of accomplishment and a chance to be creative. They also get to meet like-minded flower friends. It’s a great place to meet people and come with family and friends.
Anything else you would like to tell prospective students?
Katherine: Come with an open mind and ready to learn. You will enjoy being around creative people and working with beautiful floral material, and you will have a chance to bring that lovely arrangement home to enjoy further.
Katherine started her journey at Filoli over 20 years ago as a House and Garden Docent. She was immediately taken by the floral arrangements in the House and she then enrolled and graduated from Filoli’s Floral Design Certificate Program. Katherine continues to study floral design with leading designers throughout the country and she is currently a student in the European Master Certification (EMC) program. She also studies Ikebana locally. Katherine enjoys sharing her knowledge with aspiring Floral Design students and those who simply wish to be around beautiful flowers.
About the Home Floral Design Certificate Program
Students are not required to be part of the Certificate Program to take classes. Try a beginner or elective class, or join the Certificate Program to gain an overall understanding of flower arranging through comprehensive, hands-on courses on techniques, color theory, arrangement shapes and styles using different containers and special occasion arrangements. Upon completing all required classes and three elective classes of their choosing, all students are awarded a Floral Design Certificate of Completion. The Floral Design Certificate Program at Filoli not only teaches students how to create stunning arrangements, it also provides them with lifelong skills they can use for personal and professional endeavors.
