Summer Nights: Curator’s Choice

6:00pm
Lecture: Math, Art, and Flowers: Experiencing Symmetry at Filoli
Frank Farris, author of Creating Symmetry: The Artful Mathematics of Wallpaper Patterns, Chair, Professor, Mathematics and Computer Science Department at Santa Clara University
In his “Imaginary Landscapes” series, Farris takes delight in adding mathematical shapes decorated with patterns to photographs. Where did the patterns come from? From more photographs, mostly of flowers! In this talk, he’ll explain the process behind his art, speaking in general terms that the non-specialist can understand. It’s a story of symmetry, waves, and two kinds of beauty: mathematical and natural.
