Bay Area-based, Nicolas Bearde made his mark in the jazz world as a founding member of Bobby McFerrin’s revolutionary a cappella group “Voicestra” in the 1980’s. He has released 5 solo albums as a bandleader, and travels the world as the vocalist and narrator for sax legend Vincent Herring’s “Story of Jazz Orchestra” chronicling 100 years of recorded jazz. His silky baritone sound invites comparison to Lou Rawls, Joe Williams, and Billy Eckstine, and his engaging rapport draws the audience into his live performances. Returning to Filoli, Nicolas re-interprets the timeless songs of one of his earliest influences, Nat “King” Cole, with fresh arrangements by Josh Nelson, long-time pianist for the late Natalie Cole. Bearde’s supple phrasing and tender delivery, breathes fresh life into Nat’s trove of enduring classics such as “Unforgettable”, “Straighten up and Fly Right” and “Tenderly”.
