Chesley Bonestell Film Screening

Join us for a special screening of the documentary film Chesley Bonestell: A Brush With the Future, alongside the filmmaker and special guests.

Did you know that a young Chesley Bonestell (1888-1986) worked as an architect, helping design the Filoli estate, the Chrysler Building and later, the Golden Gate Bridge?

Chesley Bonestell became known as “The Father of Space Art” for his visions of how planets and galaxies looked before the advent of space telescopes, satellites and space probes. His illustrations appeared in many issues of Life magazine and graced the covers of numerous science fiction magazines of the 1940’s and 50’s. His inspiring books included “The Conquest of Space” and “The Exploration of Mars.” His paintings are credited with helping create America’s space program.

Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with the Filmmaker, Douglass M. Stewart, Jr. and three participants who appear in the film: Architectural Historian Christina Dikas, Photographer and Architect Robert E. David and Author Wyn Wachhorst (The Dream of Spaceflight).

There will be a special mini-exhibition of illustrations by Chesley Bonestell that feature the original architectural designs for Filoli, curated from our permanent collection.

Guests will be greeted with a glass of champagne on arrival with additional beverages available for purchase.
