Techniques taught by knowledgeable instructors and Filoli’s Garden staff are for the novice home gardener or those in the profession to apply to their own gardening projects. Whether it’s through a one–day class or A Year in the Garden, students gain an in–depth understanding of the subject matter through well thought–out curriculum and the small class size.

January-May classes are listed below. The June-December class schedule will be available in spring of 2019.

Pruning Hydrangeas

The class covers terminology, timing, and care for hydrangeas to ensure healthy growth and blooms. Become familiar with basic principles and practices of proper pruning techniques. You too can grow hydrangeas as spectacular as those found in Filoli’s Garden.

Orchid Terrariums

Orchid Terrariums

Orchids have long bloom times, look fantastic when featured under glass, and are a welcome addition to a kitchen or dining table in the winter months. A glass container, a miniature blooming orchid, and an assortment of small plants and mosses will be provided for you to create your own miniature terrarium.

This class counts as an elective for the Floral Design Certificate Program.

A Year in the Garden

A Year in the Garden

Techniques learned in A Year in the Garden are for both professional and home gardeners and can be applied to your own projects. A typical day includes a classroom lecture plus a walk-and-talk in the historic Garden or a hands-on workshop. Students also select a project to work on in their own gardens and receive guidance from the instructor. Projects can range from landscape renovations, to cataloging plant materials, to simply planting a vegetable garden for the first time. Students who take A Year in the Garden graduate with a Certificate of Completion in Horticulture.

All sessions are on Wednesdays from 10:00am – 3:00pm and include a break from 12:30-1:00 pm.

Using Filoli’s cutting garden as inspiration, learn the basics of how to design and maintain a cut flower garden that suits your style, space, and needs. Choose and grow a variety of annual and perennial plants to produce cut flowers and foliage all season long. Soil amendment, irrigation, and flower varieties will also be reviewed.

Edible Container Garden

Edible Container Garden

Discover how to design and care for a beautiful container garden. This class will focus on edible flowers and herbs. Container gardens are great for gardening in small spaces and to add a WOW-factor to patios, entryways, and other outdoor areas. Best of all, they provide constant color. You will take home your own container garden. Fee includes materials.

Bring gloves, wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to get your hands dirty.
