Floral Design Classes

A- A A+

Flower arranging has long been a tradition at Filoli and began as a way to bring the beautiful, seasonal garden flowers into Filoli’s mansion. We continue that tradition by offering a program for students who want to do the same in their own homes.

Filoli offers comprehensive, hands-on courses that cover techniques, color theory, designing with varying styles, and arranging for special occasions. Fees include all in-class materials. All classes include a take-home project so students can enjoy their arrangements at home.

Ikebana: Introduction to Moribana

This class has changed to a 1-day class.

Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging, is noted for perfect proportions and dramatic use of negative space. The world’s top floral designers recognize that a command of Ikebana design principles results in better, more sculptural design work. In this course, you will be introduced to these principles by creating arrangements in flat, shallow moribana containers. Learn about line, mass, dimension and asymmetry, as well as techniques for successfully using a pin frog. Students are invited to take home their arrangement.

The class fee includes floral materials only. Students are asked to bring a container and pin frog. See the materials list for details.
