Floral Design Classes

From imaginative and intimate centerpieces to perfectly proportioned Ikebana arrangements, floral arrangements have graced the House at Filoli since it’s completion in 1917. Filoli is an inspiring place to discover and develop your skills. All classes include a take-home project so students can enjoy their creations at home. Fees include all classroom plant materials and containers unless otherwise noted. Enrollment in the Certificate Program is optional – all classes are open to all students. However, some classes require prerequisites.

Required Certificate Program Classes are listed through 2018.
Elective Classes are listed through May, 2018.
June-December Elective classes will be available in Spring of 2018.

Floral Design Themes

MULTI-DAY CLASS: Saturday, October 13, 20, 27, 9:30 am – 3:45 pm

Parties and other special occasions are complemented by floral arrangements. In this class you will complete large arrangements, themed arrangements, hand tied bouquets, flower and plant arrangements, and tropical arrangements. We’ll celebrate the conclusion of the class with tablescapes that we create for our own “Vase to Table” event. Some floral design experience is required.

This is a required class for the Floral Design Certificate program.

Students enrolled in the required classes are asked to complete homework assignments and are responsible for purchasing the plant materials for these assignments.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations up to 2-weeks prior to a class are subject to a 25% cancellation fee.  Cancellations less than 2-weeks prior to a class are non-refundable.  Filoli does not issue credits for future classes.

Inspirations from the Autumn Garden

Let the bounty of the autumn garden inspire you to create a lush, billowy arrangement in a rustic garden urn. Incorporate vibrant foliage, branches, flowers, and seasonal accents into your design. All materials are provided, but feel free to bring foliage clippings from your own garden to share and to add a personal touch to your arrangement. Students are invited to take home their arrangement. This class counts as an elective for the Floral Design Certificate Program.

Ikebana: Introduction to Moribana

MULTI-DAY CLASS:Friday & Saturday, November 2 & 3, 9:30 am – 4:00 pm

Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging, is noted for perfect proportions and dramatic use of negative space. The world’s top floral designers recognize that a command of Ikebana design principles results in better, more sculptural design work. In this four–lesson course, you will be introduced to these principles by creating arrangements in flat, shallow moribana containers. Learn about line, mass, dimension and asymmetry as well as techniques for successfully using a pinfrog. Students are invited to take home their arrangement.

The class fee includes floral materials only. Students are asked to bring a container and pin frog. See the materials list for details.

Flower Arranging and Table Setting for the Holidays

Set the mood for your next special occasion meal – from intimate and formal to festive and free-wheeling – with the right display of flowers and table settings. Flower arrangements are the crucial element for pulling a table setting together. Watch as Wendy Morck creates stunning arrangements then matches them with festive holiday table settings. Then create your own arrangement to take home and enjoy. All materials included in fee. Students are invited to take home their arrangement.

Colonial Williamsburg Centerpieces

Colonial Williamsburg Centerpieces

Traditional holiday decorations at Colonial Williamsburg include arrangements using pine, boxwood, fir, magnolia, and leaves. Tables, mantelpieces, and sideboards are lavishly decorated. The instructor will discuss examples of traditional holiday decorations from Colonial Williamsburg with a focus on table centerpieces. Take home a holiday centerpiece bursting with fruits, berries, and flowers. All materials included in fee. Students are invited to take home their arrangement.

Lit decorative garlands are a lovely way to adorn an entryway or table for the holidays. Learn the mechanics of garland construction and how to use a lush assortment of greenery and seasonal materials. Twinkling wreaths are a welcoming sight on front doors during the holidays. You will learn the mechanics of wreath construction with the opportunity during class to embellish your luminous creation with lights, seasonal ribbons, pods, cones, and more.
