The picturesque surroundings of Filoli make a wonderful venue for art and artists, providing inspiration, a range of valuable resources, and unique class offerings.

January-May classes are listed below. The June-December class schedule will be available in spring of 2019.

Watercolor Workshop for Beginners

MULTI-DAY CLASS: Friday & Saturday, February 22 & 23, 9:30am – 3:30pm

Are you new to watercolors or do you need to build confidence? Through step-by-step instruction, learn how to control the medium and how water, paper, and pigment react to each other. Leave with a finished floral image and newfound confidence. Open to beginners and experienced artists. Fee includes all materials.

Watercolor on Rice Paper

Watercolor on Rice Paper

Use watercolors and delicate rice paper to paint images of flowers from Filoli’s spring garden. Learn to mix colors on the brush to paint different layers and create color harmony. This class will focus on tree blossoms and wisteria, but will also cover the Four Gentlemen – the plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum – which represent the four seasons. Fee includes all materials.

Filoli’s Estate Trail provides a unique view of the historic House and Nature Preserve. Learn how best to capture the beauty of nature while on the trail. This class is open to beginners as well as seasoned artists and is a wonderful way to get creative after a work week or to explore new activities with a friend. Fee includes all materials.

Plein Air Painting in the Nature Preserve

Plein Air Painting in the Nature Preserve

MULTI-DAY CLASS: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, May 9, 10 11, 9:30am – 3:30pm

Experience the tranquility and beauty of Filoli’s Nature Preserve while learning to paint plein air, or “in the open air.” Understand the process of composing a plein air painting from equipment use and preparation to drawing and painting. One-on-one critiques at the easel and group discussion will be held daily. Class size is limited in order to provide students individual attention. The focus of this class is oil; however students wishing to work in other mediums are welcome.

Prerequisite: some painting experience

The Art of Paper Flowers: Peonies

The Art of Paper Flowers: Peonies

Tiffanie Turner, author of The Fine Art of Paper Flowers will share how to make gorgeous faded coral charm peonies. She will demonstrate her unique techniques to make stamens and form, shape and style voluminous petals and leaves. Students receive extra materials to continue their projects at home. Fee includes all materials.

Scratchboard

Scratchboard

Scratchboard is a form of direct engraving where the artist scratches off dark ink to reveal a white or colored layer beneath. This technique allows the artist to use both additive and subtractive methods to create black and white pieces with rich contrast and depth. Students will be given choices of a botanical subject from Filoli’s Garden that will shine in this unique media. Fee includes scratchboard.

This class counts as an elective for the Botanical Art Certificate program but is open to all Art and Botanical Art students.

Recommended: experience with pen and ink or graphite
