The picturesque surroundings of Filoli make a wonderful venue for art and artists, providing inspiration, a range of valuable resources, and unique class offerings.

January-May classes are listed below. The June-December class schedule will be available in spring of 2019.

Plein Air Painting: Fall Colors in Oil

Please note that this class is listed in the catalog as a 3-day class but it has been changed to a 1-day class.

Capture the beauty of a fall landscape using Filoli’s Nature Preserve as a subject. Strengthen your composition through simplified shapes and learn how to create a strong focal point. Start the day with a demonstration from the instructor, then receive instruction while you create your own painting in Filoli’s meadow. The class will move indoors and conclude with an informal critique over a glass of wine. Beginning artists are welcome. Students should bring their own materials for oil painting.

Needle Felting: Pumpkins

Needle Felting: Pumpkins

Patty Trower, instructor at Fengari Fiber Arts, will teach you how to craft fall harvest pumpkins and jack o’lanterns to enhance your Halloween decor. Learn the basic techniques to sculpt wool roving with felting needles into your own unique work of art. Take home your needle-felted pumpkin and use it as inspiration to create a pumpkin patch to share with friends and family. Fee includes all materials.

This class takes place on the second floor of the historic House. Access to this class is by stairs only. For questions about accessibility, please contact the Education office by email at classes@filoli.org or by phone at 650-364-8300 x 263.

Nuno Felting: Sparkling Scarves

Nuno Felting: Sparkling Scarves

This class introduces a technique known as ‘nuno felting’, in which the fleece fibers are bonded to silk to create a strong yet soft and flexible scarf. In this class, students will be provided a length of silk fabric and fleece of a variety of colors, plus all the materials needed to produce a warm, sparkling winter scarf. Fee includes all materials.

Introduction to Stained Glass: Nightlights

Make a luminous nightlight in this introductory course to the art of stained glass. Choose colors of glass and learn to cut and copper foil the pieces together. Make a nightlight for yourself or give it as a gift. Opportunities to make more than one if time allows. Fee includes all materials.

Learn the art of needle felting by sculpting wool roving with felting needles into adorable snowmen for your holiday decor. Patty Trower, instructor at Fengari Fiber Arts, will teach the basic techniques to prick and jab your way to a snowman that is uniquely your own. Make more at home to give as gifts or turn into ornaments. Fee includes all materials.
