On Display September 7 – November 4, 2018
During Filoli’s Fall season, agricultural practices will be honored with this year’s theme of Golden Harvest. An outdoor exhibition of colorful antique farm equipment – including a vineyard plow, orchard wagon, and horse-drawn corn-stalk chopper – will be displayed throughout the Garden and Estate Trail.
Filoli’s display of antique farm equipment shows how farmers and inventors used ingenuity to solve problems in the field. This ingenuity led to innovations, which continuously made equipment obsolete. None of the machines in this exhibition have motors – they are all are pulled by horses or pushed by farmers. All were invented and used in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s and are similar to what would have been used on the property to collect fruit from the orchard or mow the hay used to feed the Roth’s horses and the Bourn’s cows.
Filoli thanks Adolph Rosekrans, Runnymede Farm in Woodside, and the San Mateo County Historical Association for making this exhibition possible.
