Volunteer Benefits
Membership in the Friends of Filoli offers opportunities for volunteer service as well as participation in special volunteer-only activities. Whether your interests lie in working with the public as a House and Garden docent, assisting the horticultural staff with maintaining the garden or providing general office support to the administrative staff, Filoli's diverse volunteer organization has an area that is suited just for you. All active Filoli volunteers receive a 10% discount in the Filoli Garden Shop and Cafe.* Plus, as an added incentive, all active volunteers who are members at the $150 Friend Circle level receive an additional 10% Garden Shop discount** - for a total of 20% off their purchases at the Filoli Garden Shop.

Volunteer Opportunities

Art/Design

Art: Art volunteers plan, promote, and present art exhibitions and classes in the Visitor and Education Center, house and gardens. Volunteers also assist in various art programs including Artist Access Days, workshops, exhibitions as well as other art related activities such as Special Event days.

Floral Design: Floral Design volunteers support the Floral Design Classes, assist with decorating Filoli for various events and assist other Filoli volunteer groups with their floral design needs. Filoli Home Floral Design Program graduates only.

Flower Arrangers: Flower Arrangers create floral arrangements for the House, Visitor and Education Center Lobby and Garden on a weekly basis. Flower Arrangers also create arrangements for teas, lectures, special events, and the holiday event.

Silk Flower Arrangers : Members create wreaths, floral arrangements, and wall buckets for sale in the gift shop and at special events.

Garden/Café/Hospitality

Café at Filoli: Volunteers sell refreshments and food items to visitors during tour days and special events. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of two shifts per month.

Gardening: Volunteers assist the gardening staff by working in the potting shed, gardens and orchard. Activities include weeding and raking the beds, removing debris and seasonal plants, trimming the walkways, potting seedlings, and light pruning. Volunteers should be in good general health and must commit to a 2-1/2 hour weekly or bi-monthly shift.

Garden Shop: Garden Shop volunteers staff the Garden Shop, operate the cash register, wrap purchases, assist guests, and periodically, restock the shelves. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of two shifts per month.

Hospitality: Assist with the food service at Filoli events by distributing box lunches and liquid refreshments at social functions, special events, lectures, and meetings.

Tour Guide/Community Speaker

Fourth Grade Docents: Docents conduct tours of the house and garden to introduce 4th grade students to the story of Filoli and its two families, and how that story fits into the history of California.

House and Garden Docents: Docents conduct public tours of the house and gardens. Docents must complete the eight week formal House and Garden training course, and lead a minimum of 18 tours during the season, mid-February through the end of October.

Self-Guided Docents: Self-Guided docents are stationed throughout the house and gardens to welcome guests to Filoli and educate them about Filoli and the families that lived here. Click here for training information.>>

Nature Education Docents:  Docents lead interpretive walks for children and adults, exploring the wonders of Filoli's 600 acre nature preserve. Completion of the Filoli Nature Education training program, taught by a local naturalist, is required. This program emphasizes understanding the inter-relatedness of all living things and their habitats. Leading 15 walks is required each year. Click here for training information.>>


Administration

Library/Collections: Volunteers assist in staffing the Friends and Sterling libraries, in re-shelving books and videos in the circulating library and in assisting members in finding material through the library catalogue system.

Visitor Services: Visitor Services volunteers greet guests and members, book tours and school programs, process admissions and inform visitors of the benefits of being a Filoli member.

Membership/Events Ticket Sales: Volunteers answer phones; sell and process memberships and tickets for all special events, classes, lectures, and workshops; and are responsible for processing Annual Fund Drive contributions, thank you notes, and letters. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 3 hours per week.

House and Garden Docent Training 2008
Applications are now being taken for the annual House and Garden Docent Training. The training begins on Saturday, February 2 and continues for eight consecutive Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in the Visitor and Education Center. The training prepares volunteers to lead guided and 4th Grade tours and to be a self-guided docent. Learning objectives and length of training vary with each docent program. Guided docents take all eight courses, while Self-Guided take the first three courses. Those interested in becoming a school tour docent take the required eight weeks, plus additional training through the 4th Grade program which focuses specifically on children’s tours. Garden Information Docents
The 2008 training class will be announced early next year. We will be looking for Filoli volunteers with experience in gardening.

Volunteer Responsibilities
All volunteers must be current members of Friends of Filoli and undergo an orientation and training period when joining a committee. The number of shifts and shift hours required of committee members varies depending on the committee. Committee members are required to secure their own replacement in the event they cannot perform their shift. If they cannot find a replacement they must call their chairperson. Volunteers missing three or more unexcused assignments will be dropped from the volunteer rolls.

As representatives of Filoli, your appearance should be clean, neat and appropriate to the activity. No jeans, tank tops, shorts, or sweat suits.
