Director of Educational Programming
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Educational Programming is responsible for the development and management of a comprehensive, integrated education program that is consistent with Filoli’s strategic mission and reflects Filoli’s unique attributes.
This position reports to the Executive Director and manages a staff of one full-time and one part-time person. Position is full-time, exempt and requires periodic weekend and/or evening service.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop, execute and support, in collaboration with key volunteers, on-going training and curricular needs for volunteer docents in house and garden, nature education, elementary school and other educational/enrichment programs;
- Support and assist volunteer chairs in the execution of Filoli’s Garden Information Docents program;
- Perform on a regular basis reviews of Filoli’s educational programs and course offerings; refine existing programs and develop new ones, as needed, to attract new enrollees and/or visitors;
- Manage Filoli’s Botanical Art Certificate Program and collaborate, where appropriate, with relevant internationally-recognized botanical art programs to benefit of program enrollees and Filoli;
- Develop presentation materials and arrange for speakers and instructors for variety of Filoli’s special events and classes;
- In collaboration with Executive Director and Controller, develop and manage annual approved annual budget;
- Write and submit to relevant foundations and agencies grant proposals for financial support of key programs;
- Serve as staff representative on Programs and Interpretation Committee of the Governing Board; assist chair of said committee, as needed;
- Represent Filoli at key external conferences and organizational meetings, as appropriate;
- Supervise Educational Program Administrator (full-time) and Curator (part-time position); develop annual work plans and write performance evaluations.
NECESSARY SKILLS, TRAITS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong background in at least one of the following programming content areas: horticulture; historic preservation; nature or conservation;
- Minimum of 8 years work experience in a public garden, historic site or educational non-profit institution;
- Minimum of five years paid or unpaid experience working with a diverse group of volunteers;
- Graduate degree in relevant area strongly preferred;
- Exemplary team-building and interdepartmental collaboration skills;
- Excellent verbal and written communications and presentation skills;
- Outstanding professional demeanor.

Weekend Security Captain
Position Description:
Be a presence in the house and garden to provide security and administrative coverage during opening hours on Saturdays and Sundays and remind guests to observe signage and Filoli policies and regulations.
Shifts and Working Hours:
Every other Saturday and Sunday* from the Second Tuesday in February through the last Saturday in October:
* may be open to negotiation; e.g., every weekend; only Saturdays; only Sundays
Hours:
Saturdays: 9:30am until 4:00pm
Sundays: 10:30am until 4:00 pm
Position Requirements:
good oral communication skills conveyed in a personable manner
working knowledge of the gardening procedures, seasonal garden lists and other plant information the Director of Horticulture shall prescribe (depending on circumstances, training may be required)
working knowledge of the families that have lived at Filoli
conformance with, and knowledge of Filoli dress code, policy and procedures
thorough knowledge of “walkie-talkie” radios, emergency procedures and first aid kit locations in the gardens
Reporting Requirements:
administrative reporting senior: Director of Visitor Services
advisory and training reporting senior: Director of Horticulture & Curator
Compensation:
To be negotiated; position is Non-Exempt and subject to established Filoli policy
Responsibilities:
-mornings, report to the Tour Office either in person or by walkie-talkie
proceed to the house, check that alarm has been turned off, open any closed doors; pull open shears, turn on lights
on Sundays proceed to Swimming Pool and Sunken Garden areas to greet guest from 11:00 to 12:00 until self-guided docents arrive
establish a roving pattern through the garden and house watching for any violations of policy or procedures
ten minutes before closing, begin to “sweep” the garden from the High Place and pool, tactfully requesting guests to vacate the gardens, reminding them that the Garden Shop remains open until 4:00pm on Saturdays and 3:30pm on Sundays.
afternoons, at 3:30, close any open shears; close interior doors as required, turn off lights. Lock front door and Exit doors by ballroom. Return radios and any “found” items to the Tour Office
if Office is closed, leave a note/voice mail advising of any hazardous conditions, or sensitive incidents which should be followed up the next day by the Director
be alert at all times for guests' safety and welfare
firmly stop guests from smoking anywhere on the premises
tactfully request guests to stay on paths and off the turf
never yell/shout at guests and be tolerant of small children's' digressions

Remember, first and foremost, your actions represent Filoli to our guests. They must be above reproach. When necessary, you must be firm, but always be pleasant, tactful and mindful of language and cultural differences.

Assistant Horticulturist
Entry level position for horticulture graduates! Train to become an estate gardener in a magnificent 16-acre formal setting containing many rare varieties of woody plants including wisteria, magnolia, camellia, heritage fruit, roses, lilac and spectacular spring bulb and annual displays. The garden contains formal box parterres, iris and perennial borders, cutting gardens, a woodland garden, a native garden, rose gardens, bowling green , turf, garden pools, greenhouses and orchards. Filoli horticulturists also maintain the surrounding oak woodlands and fields, help to control invasive weeds, mow roadsides and clear fence lines.
Qualified Applicant
We are looking for versatility, leadership and a strong commitment to achieving high standards of horticulture, preservation and safety in a team environment. Must be hands on and interested in working outdoors year round even in inclement weather, on ladders and scaffolding and capable of lifting 80 pounds. Job includes operating power equipment like blowers, mowers, trimmers and tractors and maintaining irrigation systems, using best practices for pruning, water management and pest control. Work side by side with and direct garden volunteers, teach classes, train student interns and support fund raising events. Degree in horticulture preferred. Valid Ca. Qualified Pest Applicator's Certificate and Ca. Driver's License required within 6 months. HMO medical and dental, 2 weeks paid sick and vacation, 12 paid holidays, and 401K matching plan. Filoli is a 654 acre historic site owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and located on the San Francisco Bay peninsula near Woodside.
