Something for everyone in our Adult Programs.

What is better than to see a child engaged and having fun as they create their own unique masterpiece or discover why so many newts make Filoli their home? Children and their families can enjoy Filoli and its bountiful resources through interactive programming and hands–on learning designed just for them.

School Programs
Filoli serves thousands of school children and teachers each year through three curriculum-based programs. Scholarships and transportation funds are available to schools serving a high percentage of low–income families. For more information visit the Teachers and School Programs page.

Embroidered Red Mushroom Design

NEW Afterschool Program!
Art with a Needle

Wednesdays, March 1 through April 5, 2017, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm
Instructor: Anna Davidson

Mastering a needle and thread is so much fun! Students follow the chart, choose their colors, design their own motifs and create something special. Embroidery liberates students from the misguided belief that creativity is only for the gifted – everyone can have success with it! These classes teach dexterity, focus, how to follow instructions and how to use new tools and materials while in a supporting fun environment. The instructor will also show students several 19th century samples embroidered by children as young as 7 years old and share stories about their lives in Colonial America.

Fee: $200 members; $220 non–members.

Family Fun with Gardening
Pizza in a Pot

Instructor: Karen Flores

Gardening is fun and easy, you are never too young or too old to start! This class invites any one adult, one child combination to have fun while learning how to make a “Pizza in a Pot”. Participants will decorate and pot-up their own pizza pot to take home, grow and eventually make a pizza using their freshly grown ingredients.

Fee: $80 members; $95 non–members. Ticket price is for one adult and one child age 5 and up and includes all materials.

Botanical Art for Kids Class

Botanical Art for Children

Instructor: Dorothy Hunter, Graduate of Filoli’s Botanical Art Certificate Program

Children age 10 and older are introduced to the wonderful world of botanical art, including fundamental principles, drawing skills and color mixing using graphite pencil and colored pencils. Each class begins with a walk through the garden, followed by a talk about botanical art and the tools they will use, a light snack then hands-on instruction and drawing. A fun morning spent creating something beautiful!

Fee: $50 members; $60 non–members.

Family Fun with Flowers

Enjoy these fun classes as a family outing. Flower arranging is creative and easy, and you are never too young or too old to start! Any one-adult-one-child combination can enjoy each other’s company while learning to make a beautiful flower arrangement to take home. Each participant will make their very own arrangement.

Fairy Garden

Fairy Gardens for Families

Saturday, May 6, 2017, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Create something magical together! Any one-adult one-child combination can enjoy each other’s company while learning to create a special garden any fairy would be delighted to live in. Using things found at Filoli along with accessories provided by the instructor, you will build a very special one-of-a-kind fairy garden of your very own.

Fee: $80 members; $95 non–members. Fee is good for one adult and one child age 7 and older and includes most materials. Please bring a shallow container to hold your fairy garden – 8” x 12” – rectangle or round. A box, basket, toy or other fun item could be used. Be creative!

Summer Art Camp

Tuesday, July 18 through Friday, July 21, 2017, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm
Instructor: Dorothy Hunter

Children will enjoy exploring different media such as graphite, colored pencil and watercolor as they discover how to observe, draw and paint a variety of natural subjects. From flowers, branches and trees to birds, foxes and raccoons, children learn how to create life-like artwork while experiencing the splendor of Filoli nature preserve in our classroom in the woods, Red’s Barn. They will surely be inspired to create masterpieces!

Fee: $200 members; $220 non–members.Fee is good for one child age 10 and up and includes all materials.

Children’s Garden Exploration Day

Saturday, August 5, 2017, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Instructor: Hallie Schmidt, Filoli Horticulture Staff

Children age 7 through 10 are invited to come, enjoy and learn at Filoli for the day. Activities will teach them about gardens, and the animals and plants that live in them. Children will have fun doing crafts, playing field games, and pick flowers and fruit from the Garden to take home.

Fee: $50 members; $60 non–members.
